Sun, Sea and Shipping

The office is now closed for the Holiday break. And though I may I dream of sunny beaches and the sipping of some tall tropical drink while the world goes by, alas it is but a dream.

Work still goes on behind the scenes, and the weekend is being spent wiping off all the cured soap bar faves, and wrapping them ready for the order boxes. They'll be packing today so they can all ship tomorrow to make sure they each arrive in plenty time for the Holidays.

Shipping notices will be going out today, so if you're waiting for your fave soap you'll be getting yours soon. Get ready to check those email boxes.

Lavender Essential Oil

Lavender essential oil takes its name from the Latin Lavare, meaning "to wash". It has been traditionally respected for centuries, and nurses were known to wash the wounds of soldiers with lavender oil during the first world war, when antiseptic supplies were short.

The benefits of lavender oil for the skin are many, and these are probably due to its antibacterial and anti-inflammatory qualities. Many find lavender is very helpful with troublesome skin complaints such as acne, eczema, or psoriasis, and the soothing calm of lavender makes it a friend to sunburn, winter itch, and flaky or cracked skin.

Its varying uses in health and wellness are legendary. Its aroma relaxes, and helps with inducing sleep. Lavender essential oil is also used in aromatherapy for sore muscles, and aches and pains.

Up the Wall

Look over there, mugging for the camera in front of the famous Wall Street Bull. It's Spearmint Grapefruit, looking mighty imposing in another Around the World snap.

The Wall Street Bull, rearing back and ready to charge ahead, is an 11 foot tall, 7000 pound bronze statue. One of a collection of five such statues, it draws thousands of tourists per day and represents unbridled optimism in the heart of New York City's financial district.

At three inches tall and four ounces of olive, coconut and palm oil, Spearmint Grapefruit waves a heavenly scent and has the power to clean things up. I say the bull is no match.

Island Beauty Face Mask

As the season of fall draws to a close, the face starts to feel the harsh of the colder, more biting climate. The dry of the winter months take their toll on the skin, and as dead and dying skin cells build up on the surface, a barrier is created. It is this hard layer of cells which prevents moisturizing cremes from penetrating the skin and realising their full potential, often resulting in the common complaint of a dull and lifeless complexion.

Pineapple is a wonderful ingredient for the skin. As well as having anti-inflammatory qualities and being a great astringent, it also holds an enzyme called Bromeliad, which helps shed the skin of dead and dying cells. Olive oil is a gentle hypoallergenic oil, rich in vitamin E to helps with skin restoration. Honey is anti-microbial and is a wonderful humectant, helping to hold onto moisture and lock it in.

This simple facial mask uses all three of these natural skin loving ingredients and can be made with ease from your kitchen cupboard:

Island Beauty Face Mask

You will need:
1/4 cup of pineapple chunks (fresh chopped or canned)
A small pour of extra virgin olive oil
Drizzle of warmed honey.

How to:
Whizz the pineapple with a hand blender until smooth. Stir in the olive oil and warmed honey, using the back of a spoon to incorparate. With fingertips, apply the paste gently to the face, avoiding the eye area. Leave on for about ten minutes. Wipe away with warm damp face cloth.

Notes: Always test for allergies first. Be sure to throw away any unused mask, as it is not preserved.

Music To Soap By - Annie Lennox

I adore melody. I love the guitar, and I prefer rhythm over base or lead. I also love the piano, though I only tinkle the ivories and don't consider myself a keyboard player of any kind. Whenever I hear instruments playing, the whole music corral of my mind has already jumped the fence and is running ahead with the melody, long before the singer comes in to lasso the notes.

For some reason, whenever I'm making soap it's percussion I crave. I still demand melody, but it's more of a chant that commands me. Almost anthem like. I weigh the oils out with a purpose as the drum beat bounces off the walls in my workshop. I'm eager to begin the melt while the lye cools, against the backdrop of my chosen song for the soapfest. And it is the one song... on repeat for the whole day.

Have you ever seen dressage? That's where the horse and rider put on a brilliant display of teaming together to music. Today while I soap, I have one of my all time shout out loud anthems on full blare. I would dearly love to see horse and rider performing to this in a dressage ring. I think the workmanship would be unforgettably awesome.

Power Your Shower

I first made the Orange Tree Blast bar back in April of 2005. I wanted a nice bar for the shower. A fresh bar that could be enjoyed by both women and men, and also a nice hard bar that would stand up to a lot of use.

I love the citrus oils for their deodorizing qualities, but I also needed to incorporate an essential oil that was a warrior on bacteria so it could be enjoyed after the gym or pool. Tea tree oil was top of the list, and combining it with a healthy dose of sweet orange oil gave me the incredibly clean scent that I was after. But it was the addition of a shot of peppermint oil that created the real freshness that sets it apart from any other tea tree soap. Tea tree oil is great for antibacterial cleansing, but I didn't want the overpowering smell that is associated with it. The combination of the citrus oil and the mint oil tames it nicely.

I have always added soybean oil to my shower bar formula. It's a nice moisturizing oil, and used as an additive during the "trace" phase of the soapmaking process, it lends a nice lotioned after-feel to the skin. Of course, exfoliating is a neccessary where keeping the skin moisturiized is concerned, and poppy seeds never fail. They are spherical, and so they have a kind roll on the skin. They also create a little dotted prettiness in the overall look of the finished bar.

And so Orange Tree Blast was born. It's a must for any shower, and has remained a faithful in my classic Manor Hall line. Many love it for themselves, and many buy it as a stocking stuffer for the men in their lives at holiday time. Me? I use it daily in the shower, and have done so for the past four and a half years. I never tire of the fresh awakening scent, and I've never brought anything home on my feet from the gym or pool. It's a little four ounce block of wonderful fresh fighting fayre for your skin.

It's in the Bag

It's been a busy week. In fact, the office closed yesterday for the Columbus Day holiday weekend. I'll be working for most of it, but I'm hoping to get one day out.

Along with what you see on the web site, I also do personalized favors for showers, wedding parties and special events. And this week, there's a very special event I've been packing little Manor Hall goody bags for. The photos are just a small snapshot from behind the scenes.

Pretty Me Pumpkin Mask

It's the start of the Halloween month, and many a good pumpkin will be hollowed out and candled this next few weeks. But hold on before you trash the goodness you've scooped out, because pumpkin is a wonderful natural ingredient for your skin, and a simple facial treat can be made in minutes with ingredients from your kitchen cupboard.

Pumpkin is naturally soothing on the skin, and is also very moisturizing. Used as an ingredient in facial masks, it acts similarly to a carrier oil, and helps to carry the nutrients from other ingredients deep into the skin. Pumpkin is also rich in vitamins A and C.

Pretty Me Pumpkin Mask

You will need:
3 tablespoons of pumpkin (cooked)
1 tablespoon of honey (gently warmed)
1 teaspoon of cream/milk/or yogurt

How to:
Cook fresh pumpkin in a little water, then mash with a fork. Add the warmed honey and your cream/yogurt, then blend smooth with the back of a spoon. Apply the paste gently to the face, avoiding the eye area. Leave on for about ten minutes. Wipe away with warm damp face cloth.

Notes: Always test for allergies first. Be sure to throw away any unused mask, as it is not preserved.

In fact, Honey Me Smooth is this month's order box freebie. That sounds good at any elevation.

Burst of Color

I mentioned a couple of weeks back that I was going to kick up the mint bars. Well, consider the first mint bar kicked.

At the beginning of last week, armed with plenty of organic sunflower oil and babassu oil, I thought I'd get a bit artistic with the Spearmint Grapefruit bar. So, pink clay and ground parsley in hand, I split the soap batch into three and had some fun with colors. I think it's one of my best swirls yet.

It's sitting on the curing shelves, screaming spearmint. I can't wait to get it on the site. Just a few more weeks to go.

Music to Soap By - Katrina and the Waves

Fall might be upon us, but there's something about sea, sun and sand. I really do like it. I also like real good summer music. The type that makes you want to drive with your windows down, shouting along to the chorus. I've been listening to this one all day today. But I haven't been soaping. I've been wrapping. And wrapping. And wrapping. Tomorrow, I'll be walking on my own bit of sunshine. Soaping again. Just like the music, I love it.

Golden Jojoba & Oatmeal

Spilling with wildcrafted jojoba oil and fine oatmeal, this soothing bar of extra mild is a luxury for your skin.

Hypoallergenic, non-toxic, and carrying the natural antioxidant vitamin E, the skin softening qualities of jojoba oil are exceptional. It penetrates the skin with ease, and is readily absorbed without any greasy after feel. It is non-clogging on pores, and with the anti-inflammatory qualities of myristic acid, is a very useful oil for acne. The different moisturizing properties found in oats all contribute toward maintaining the integrity of the skin's barrier, preventing water loss, and alleviating itch.

This bar is fragrance free, and yields a wonderful creamy rich lather to baby your skin with the gentleness it deserves.

Mattoon Street Arts Festival 2009

They had forecast it to rain all day long. We arrived to set up at about 8:45am and the rain stopped. We didn't see another drop until we were packing up the car to go. All in all, a very comfortable day weatherwise and not a bad turnout. They're saying tomorrow is supposed to be sunny and 75 degrees, so I think it's going to be a busy day. The Festival is always great.

A big thank you to all my customers who turned out to see us, and all my regulars who buy from us at Mattoon once a year. I love seeing all of you and it really makes all the work worth it. When you sell primarily on the internet, you don't get to interact too much with customers. I love watching everyone pick up the soap bars and smell them. It's very, very satisfying.

Oh, and by the way...

Whooooo-hoo! Yes, that red ribbon is mine. My booth (above) won second place in my category of "mixed media". I can't remember the last time I won anything. The woman came over talking to me and then said she "had something" for me. I had no idea. It was the ribbon! I really had no idea. I grinned like a cheshire cat for the rest of the day. I'm still grinning. Rain or shine tomorrow, it doesn't matter. I got the prize.

Thanks again to everyone, and me and my ribbon are looking forward to a gorgeous day tomorrow.

We Will Always Remember

I love New York. It's one of the most breathtaking places I've ever been to. You walk the streets of Manhattan and the city is all around you. It's absolutely fantastic. I never got to see the Twin Towers. I'd had plenty of opportunities to visit New York in the fifteen months before September 11th. I was always too afraid to go. The reputation of New York before Rudy stepped in and cleaned it up wasn't a very good one. I only came to America in 2000 and I didn't really know much about it, other than yellow taxis, honking horns and drive-by shootings. That's all we ever heard about America in small town England.

I've been to New York too many times to count since September 11th, 2001. I go to the Twin Towers. I go to the fire station and walk around Ground Zero, remembering the images and sounds from the news that morning. I've taken many photographs this last eight years and every year the landscape has altered. The three above are from my own personal collection.

Every year it seems to change, yet there are still no skyscrapers going upward and no real memorial. But the one thing that doesn't change, no matter the weather, no matter the time of day or year, no matter what else is going on in the city, is the eerie quiet that surrounds the area. The one thing that always strikes me when I go there, the one thing that comes to me whether I invite it or not, is remembering the choices that people made that day. People way up above chose to leap to certain doom, rather than face a terrible end by fire. And people safely on the ground chose to go inside and upward to try and rescue those that were trapped, without any thought for their own life.

Those choices, made by people like you and me, are the story of that day. My heartfelt sympathies go out to everyone whose lives changed forever on that New York blue sky morning. God bless the men and women who serve and protect us, and their families, too. May we always remember.

Bar Hopping

Can you believe it's September already? I'm gearing up to the holiday season. I love this time of year.

The curing room is full of soaps and full of scents, both classic and new. These soaps may be my creamiest ever. Look at the way they're shining. I think the drier days and cooler nights really lend themselves nicely to the curing process. I can't wait to wrap these babies.

Pictured above are Fragrance Free, Lavenders Wild, Calendula Calm & Co, and Honey Rose Complexion bars. It was the beginning of the year when I kicked up my Lavenders Wild bar. I'm doing the same with the mint ones. I'll be unveiling those in October. Watch this space.

Music To Soap By - Jimmy Nail

Soap making is a centuries old industry. Many indie businesses today, are looking to the old and making it in a modern world. America is a fantastic place for dreams and opportunity. It's what it's known for world wide. The American dream.

This morning, I'm making the old traditional lavender and oatmeal soap bar. No matter what new comes along, the old always seems to be there guiding us with wisdom when considering modern change. I truly believe if we cannot respect the old, there's no chance for any new.

Today, my music to soap by is in full respect to the old. Whatever your industry may be, it's the old that made it what it is today. And it'll be the old that will make it what it will be tomorrow. I think it pays to bear that in mind when we find ourselves attracted to the shine and glitter of the promised possibilities of the new.
